Bring your own device (BYOD) for 2027
In 2027, the whole kura will transition to BYOD.
As outlined in our strategic document, Digital-Whaia te Matauranga, Whaia te Hiranga Akonga Achievement and Quality Teaching Digital Plan, our goal is to ensure all ākonga are “confident, curious, and capable lifelong learners prepared to thrive and shape their futures in a rapidly evolving digital world”. This shift prepares students for NZQA’s move towards digital-first examinations and helps challenge equity bias.
BYOD Minimum Specifications (see attachment below for more info)
· Chromebook: Intel N150 processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB SSD storage
· Windows: Intel I5, 16GB RAM, 256 GB SSD storage, 14” screen
· Mac: MacBook Air, M2 processor, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD storage, 13” screen.
To ensure the device is useful in the classroom it must:
· Have a battery that lasts a school day – the school can’t provide power outlets for students to charge their laptops nor have power leads run across the floor (health and safety issues).
· Support one of the following operating systems: Windows 11, MacOS or ChromeOS.
· The device must have a keyboard: this would exclude iPads/tablets unless a keyboard was added.
For 2027, there will only be two options for those students who are unable to bring their own device:
1. Term-by-Term Loan: With genuine hardship, whānau can apply for a term loan of a device while sourcing funds to purchase their own device. Term loan devices are issued at the start of the Term and must be returned to the library in the last week of Term (see application form below).
2. Day Loans: A strictly limited number of devices will be available on a first-in, first-served basis for students who occasionally forget or fail to charge their device. Day loans are issued before Period 1 starts and must be returned to the library at the end of Period 5, the same day.
To prepare for BYOD 2027, Term 4 2026 there will be no term loan or department-held devices available. Only a limited number of day loans will be available, on a first-in, first-served basis. From week five of Term 4, all school devices will be withdrawn for a thorough audit and repair. Senior students without a device and preparing for exams may use a library Chromebook, in the library, or seek permission to use a device in the computer classrooms.
If you have any questions or concerns, our Librarian, Kathy Rodger runs our BYOD programme from the Library.
